With a background in corporate marketing and events, Layla worked as Marketing Manager for a successful Nordic tipi rental business for five years before joining the Tentipi team in 2018. She now manages Event Tent marketing for all of our regions and is passionate about building the brand across the globe.

We design, craft, and test our tents here in Sweden. The harsh climate, the pristine wilderness that surround us, the quiet and warm-hearted people we meet in our everyday lives – that’s our source of inspiration. 
We believe that a tent that can endure here in the Arctic will work in any part of the world. And our customers prove us right. Tentipi tents are used as base camp at 5,300 metres, host massive beach parties in Mauritius, give shelter in the Atacama Desert and keep people dry by the rainy coast of Wales.

We want our tents to last as long as they possibly can, for the benefit of both our customers and the environment. To achieve this, we apply a long-term perspective to the production of our canvases by investing in high-quality, durable materials and smart, timeless design that increases the life span of the product.

Canvas – built to last

We spend a lot of time on calculating the best ways to cut our canvases so that the absolute most of the raw material ends up in a finished product.
First, we cut out the big sections, the triangular panels that make up the walls of the tents. The in-between leftovers are used for attachment points, pockets, enforcement, etc.
Parts that we don’t find a direct use for we save for the future, they come in handy when we train new staff or when a customer calls in and need a patch for repairing their tent.
Odd pieces that can’t be used anywhere else we make into hammocks and storage bags.
And you won’t believe how many handy things you can make from leftover fabric! Here at the factory we have tool belts, rain shelters for poles, aprons, storage boxes… all crafted from the best canvases on the market.

Reducing waste material

It’s one of nature’s strongest fibres, it has much lower carbon footprint than conventionally grown cotton, and it’s strong. And it’s been on our radar for a long, long time. Hemp is the hero ingredient in Safir eco, coupled with recycled polyester and organic cotton, creating a high-performing canvas for our most advanced camping tent. 
Judging from the look of our CEO’s eyes when pitching the Safir eco, we can confidently say that we’ll see more Tentipi products made from hemp in the future.

In the same village in northern Sweden where founder Bengt Grahn sew the first Nordic tipi decades ago, we have our first production plant. Surrounded by the wilderness of northern Sweden, we have been making large event tents in this factory by hand since 1991.

Our largest production facility is in the coastal city Qingdao. Here in our fully owned factory, we produce both small tents for camping and large event tents. We also have a sales unit serving the Chinese market.

The company

From our home village in northern Sweden’s forestland to the rest of the world. Always with passion and quality.

The idea came to me when I was sitting by a stream, far out in the wilds of Swedish Lapland. I was tired and hot after a long day of exciting white-water rafting and river canoeing. All I wanted to do was socialise and eat dinner with my friends around a fire. There were six of us divided on two tunnel tents, we were cooking outside and the mosquitoes were horrendous. I felt we were missing something in our environment that was preventing us from relaxing and being close to each other.

More than ten years later, I was working as a church warden in the small village of Moskosel, Swedish Lapland, knowing that this wasn’t my career, but not sure of what direction I should take. One evening, as I was changing a bulb in the church hall, it all came together. I was going to make cone shaped tents – Nordic tipis.
These shelters were traditionally used by the Sami people, aboriginal to this part of the world. Made to live in, built around the open fire for heat, cooking and socialising. Drawing inspiration from that design, coupled with modern materials and functions, I felt I was onto something.

With almost no experience of sewing I crafted my first tent in the basement of an old school building. I sold the tents through mail-order and at first, I was happy just to have an income to pay the rent. But soon my ambitions grew, I wanted to make the best tent in the world.

Now, many years have passed. We've long ago moved out from that basement in Moskosel – we now own the factory down the road. We’ve sold tents on all continents and we've created a worldwide Nordic tipi event industry employing hundreds of people. Our products are used for arctic expeditions as well as for hosting amazing beach parties in Mauritius.
But no matter how much we've grown, our mission remains the same: to make the best Nordic tipis in the world and to treat our customers, staff and the environment with respect.

The story

“In 1989 I sewed my first Nordic tipi in the basement of an old school building in Moskosel, Swedish Lapland. Though my tools and skills were modest, I wanted to make the best tents in the world.

We were established in 1989 in Swedish Lapland and still make tents here today. 
 
Our Nordic tipis take inspiration from the kåta, the traditional home of the Sami people, aboriginal to this part of the world. 
 
“Kåta” or “Lavvu” is a simple cone-shaped frame of wooden poles, covered with animal hides, with an opening at the top to let out smoke. A quick way for the nomadic reindeer herding Sami people to make a wind-resistant and functional home, easy to keep warm. 
 
The principle was simple: the fire created warmth and the hides kept it in. The fire also provided light and a homely atmosphere. Cooking and smoking food, drying clothing and other household chores could be easily done inside. 
 
Because the kåta weighed little in relation to its size, it was the perfect solution for a nomadic lifestyle. The wooden frame was easy to make so it was left behind when the nomadic people moved on. In practice, they often returned to their earlier camps year after year, so the kåta was set up quickly using the frame previously left there. 
 
Tentipi Nordic tipis are based upon the traditional design principles of the Sami kåta, coupled with innovative new design and the latest materials and construction techniques.
